When Artem Sultanbekov relocated from Osh to Bishkek in 2018, he was not simply accepting a new position. He was answering a calling shaped by service and a belief that healthcare could be better. Today, as the Chief Operating Officer of Bishkek City Hospital No. 1, Sultanbekov is living proof of what a BHU education can lead to.

Sultanbekov graduated from Bishkek Health University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration before completing his Master of Health Services Administration degree in 2016. He credits BHU's mission-driven approach to education for shaping his leadership philosophy.

"At BHU, we were constantly reminded that we are not just managing systems — we are serving people," Sultanbekov said. "That perspective changed how I lead. I walk the floors of the hospital every morning because I know what it means to see healthcare from the patient's point of view."

His journey from student to hospital COO has not been without challenges. After graduating, he worked for several years in clinic management positions in Osh before transitioning to Bishkek to take on a regional health directorate role. In 2022, he was appointed Deputy Director at Bishkek City Hospital No. 1, and was promoted to COO earlier this year.

Sultanbekov says BHU's emphasis on whole-person care, ethical leadership and community engagement has been central to every decision he has made throughout his career. He returns to campus each year to speak with current students about what lies ahead.

"I tell students: the degree is the beginning. The mission is for a lifetime," he said.
